Virusscan: what works and what not
Thursday, November 5, 2009

A quick update on TRK's virusscan, the antivirus program wrapper in TRK.
-Grisoft AVG is broken ever since they upgraded to a newer version. The usage has completely changed and virusscan is not adapted for it. In the next version of TRK, AVG will be thrown out because version 8.5 for Linux has no more cleaning capabilities. For now it has been marked as a "dead feature" and will refuse to work in TRK
-Work is in progress for a new version of TRK and I'm adding Avast as a virusscanner.
-Clamav, although at an obsolete version, still works
-F-prot works
-Vexira works AGAIN! I previously announced it had become defunct since it didn't receive any more recent updates, but apparently they have a new version of the scanner. Luckily the internals and usage haven't changed, so I was able to adapt the download url to the new version and it seems to work alright.

Keep you eyes open for a new version of TRK in the near future.

Thanks for the update. Was wondering what was up. Am a pseudo newbie to the TRK signed on at 3.3. So was wondering how do we use Vexira, I'm sure its just viruscan -a vexira? Just curious. Looking forward to the Avast addition. I love TRK, its saved me arse a couple times, SERIOUSLY! You rock, thanks for all of your hard work

'virusscan -a va' for vexira.
Others:
'viruscan -a fprot'
'virusscan -a bde'
Avg is broken and clam is the default if you give no arguments.
Virusscan -h gives you the help.

I'm a real Linux newbie, so apologies for such a basic question. I ran f-prot, which identified some viruses and told me where they were. What do I have to do to read the log file?
Thanks,
Michael

The logfile is in /tmp, but it's gone after a reboot.
For next version of virusscan, logs will be on the disk you've scanned, in the root (C:\)

I don't mind the log going in /tmp (I can always transfer it to /hdaX myself if I want to keep it) but it would be good if the log name included the name of the filesystem just scanned. I've just scanned a customer machine with F-Prot and been told that there were viruses, but /tmp/f-prot-out.log only reflects the results of scanning the machine's second partition (manufacturer's hidden recovery partition, virus-free). I'll have to restore from backup and re-scan to let the customer know what was found.

Another vote for Avir AntiVir. It has very good detection rate. Better then the other's currently on the distro.

Ok. I have a real problem. Today is 5/1/2010 and I have a Trojan [trojan.FakeAv] on my laptop that can't be removed.

I did have micro$oft security essentials installed, and I swear I'm almost 99.9999% sure I got it while I was browsing the sci-fi channel website this afternoon (s y f y . c o m.) It was the last thing I expected!!

The micro$oft product is free; so, I went out and bought Norton Internet Security 2010 ($69.00 that I don't have right now.) It has completely failed to remove my virus.

Again, the name of the Trojan is Trojan.FakeAV. Now, I swear I did not click on anything, or say OK to anything. This Trojan must have exploited some internal weakness of Internet Exploder 8 to get on my system.

I am up the famous creek without a paddle. All of my school files are on that computer; as well as, my personal finances, private stuff, and ...etc. I don't have time to waste on installing windows, and doing the updates, and ...etc. My senior project report is due next week, so are my labs for various classes, and ... suffices to say that I have more work than I have time.

You guys have never failed me before .... So HERE GOES EVERYTHING ....

... keep you posted.....

Found your TRK very usefull but saddened AVG not working.
AVG have their own Linux Boot Rescue Disc at
http://www.avg.com/gb-en/avg-rescue-cd-download
Could that be incorporated into your Kit or is it copyright protected ?
